John Cena will be at WWE Backlash, but his role at the Tampa event was not a last-minute call. According to Bodyslam.net, the Cenation Leader had already agreed to appear for WWE several weeks ago, before he posted that he would deliver historic news at the show.
From a logistical standpoint, the appearance is also considered straightforward, as Cena currently lives in the Tampa area. Backlash takes place this Saturday, May 9, at Benchmark International Arena, with the event streaming on the ESPN app in the United States.
Speculation picked up after Cena said the announcement would change the WWE experience for both wrestlers and fans.
Over the past few months, WWE has used him as a kind of ambassador, including in initiatives tied to Club WWE, the fan benefits program offering perks such as early ticket access and exclusive merchandise.
On a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that Cena’s Backlash appearance is part of the new agreement he signed with WWE after retiring from the ring. The deal calls for a specific number of appearances, with Tampa being one of them.
Cena has not wrestled since December 2025, when he lost to Gunther in his final match. So far, WWE has given no indication that his Backlash return will involve an in-ring bout. On the event card, Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu, while Seth Rollins faces Bron Breakker.
