John Cena said winning his 17th world title and breaking Ric Flair’s record meant more for WWE and for pro wrestling than it did for him personally.
During a Q&A session at the Tampa Bay Comic Convention, shared by FanX Comic Conventions, Cena explained his thinking behind the achievement. He said he saw it mainly as a way to prove that a record long considered unbreakable could still be broken.
“17 passes the record set by the Nature Boy Ric Flair. It’s a history-making moment, but personally, I think it was more important for WWE. I think it was more important for wrestling.”
Cena recalled that he’d already made his intentions clear at the 2025 Royal Rumble, when he officially set out to chase down the 17th world title. The goal, he said, was to pave the way for another wrestler to reach No. 18 at some point.
“And the reason I want to chase down 17 is to show that it’s possible. And I want to be around to shake the hand of the person that wins 18.”
Cena also praised WWE’s current generation. In his view, several young names have enough time left in their careers to make 17, or even 18, world titles a realistic goal.
“I think it’s way more impactful for WWE. We got so much young talent now that actually have a chance if they play their cards right and they really hustle and give it all they got, they got a chance to win 17, 18.”
Cena broke the record on April 20, 2025, on night two of WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, defeating Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
His 17th and final world title reign lasted 105 days. Cody Rhodes regained the Undisputed WWE Championship from Cena on August 3 of that year at SummerSlam, after beating him in a Street Fight.
