Kevin Owens “Blames” His Weight for Not Winning the Undisputed WWE Championship

Kevin Owens didn’t let his loss to CM Punk get him down. At the August 22 WWE Summer Tour stop at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Owens joked about his weight while talking about the world title.

Owens had just beaten The Miz when he grabbed the mic and riffed on how he’d expected to show up with the championship after winning it the night before.

“I was hoping when I showed up here tonight, I was hoping my bag would be a little heavier and I’d have a shiny WWE Championship around my waist. Oh, not around my waist, it wouldn’t really fit. Over my shoulder.”

The joke came just one night after Owens challenged CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event of Friday Night SmackDown in Toronto. Sami Zayn tried to help his longtime friend by handing him the title belt to use on Punk, but Owens refused. Frustrated, Zayn cracked Owens with the belt himself, giving Punk the opening to hit the GTS and retain.

Zayn attacked both Owens and Punk after the match, making it clear the issues between the three are far from over.

The loss also snapped Owens’ impressive run since his return. He came back at SummerSlam on August 2 after 17 months on the shelf, winning a Fatal 4-Way over Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor, and Gunther to earn the shot at Punk.
