WWE Plans for CM Punk and Kevin Owens Feud Revealed

CM Punk and Kevin Owens are set to square off this Friday on SmackDown in a highly anticipated Undisputed WWE Championship match, but the title bout may end up being a one-and-done.

Owens earned the shot at SummerSlam, returning from a serious neck injury to win a Fatal 4-Way over Sami Zayn, Gunther, and Finn Bálor.

According to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live, as of a few days ago, WWE was treating Punk vs. Owens as a standalone match with no plans to build it into a longer program.

“Kevin Owens is apparently the betting favorite tonight. This doesn’t mean the title is changing. It could be a DQ win or something. One way or another, whatever the finish ends up being, as of a few days ago, the idea was that this match is a one-and-done.”

While Owens is listed as the betting favorite, that doesn’t necessarily point to a title change. As Alvarez noted, a DQ or countout finish would give Owens the win without the championship changing hands.

The match also carries personal significance for Owens. The Canadian chose Toronto for his title shot and has revealed that his parents will be in the arena, which takes on added weight because his mother’s health issues have made longer trips difficult.

Despite decades of shared history in professional wrestling, Punk and Owens have never had a one-on-one match.

CM Punk has held the Undisputed WWE Championship since June 7, 2026, when he defeated Sami Zayn on Monday Night RAW in Chicago.
