Michael Cole, one of WWE’s top names for nearly three decades, revealed that he already has a plan for ending his commentary career with the company, though that is not expected to happen anytime soon.
In a recent interview with OutKick’s Bobby Burack, Cole discussed when he plans to retire, noting that he is 59 and turns 60 this week.
“I want to get to retirement age. I’d like to get to 65 if I can.”
That said, Cole made it clear that he has no plans to hang on at all costs, especially if he feels his performance is slipping. He said he does not want to still be doing the job at 80.
“I want to get out at the top of my game.”
Cole also said he has already asked Triple H, top WWE executive Lee Fitting, and his producers to tell him if they notice any decline in his work.
He compared that approach with other sports broadcasters who he said have become shells of their former selves.
“I don’t want that.”
Cole confirmed that he signed a new multiyear contract with WWE about a year ago, which keeps him with the company for a while longer.
He joined WWE in 1997 and took on a number of behind-the-scenes roles over the years, including leading the announce team.
More recently, however, he stepped away from those responsibilities to focus solely on his broadcast work. Even so, he said he spent 200 to 230 days on the road over the past year.
