Sami Zayn’s brief reign as Undisputed WWE Champion left many fans frustrated. However, it appears WWE is working on a long-term story for the former champion.
Zayn captured the first world title of his career at Night of Champions on June 27, defeating Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match. Nine days later, CM Punk defeated Zayn on Raw to win the title.
Speaking on The Sal Licata Show, Michael Cole asked fans to be patient and assured them that the title loss is part of something bigger for Sami.
“There’s a long-term story with Sami that’s going to be playing out now over the fact that he lost his championship… I really think people are going to enjoy where the Sami Zayn story is going to go over the next couple of weeks.”
The first chapter will come this Saturday, July 18, at Saturday Night’s Main Event at Madison Square Garden. Zayn will team with Gunther to face Punk and Rhodes in a Tag Team Match.
The pairing is notable because Gunther was directly responsible for creating the opening that allowed Punk to take the title from Zayn. Zayn has yet to appear on WWE programming since losing the championship.
