Chelsea Green’s days as interim champion appear to be over. On Friday’s SmackDown, Joe Tessitore introduced her as the new WWE Women’s Champion, and Green came out wearing a shirt that read “Permanent Champion.”
Going into the Philadelphia show, WWE was still officially promoting Green as Interim WWE Women’s Champion. She won the title at SummerSlam on 08/02 in the Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match, beating Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, and Lash Legend.
WWE’s Women’s Championship title history page now lists Green as the “Championship Holder,” with her reign dating back to SummerSlam. The site-wide champions section also lists her simply as WWE Women’s Champion with no “Interim” designation.
There is one wrinkle. The same title history page still lists Rhea Ripley’s reign as active since 04/19, so the situation isn’t fully settled on WWE’s end.
Ripley confirmed this week that she underwent knee surgery for a meniscus injury. She last wrestled on 06/03 in Portugal, though her final title defense came at Clash in Italy on 05/31, where she retained over Jade Cargill.
Per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the hope within WWE is that Ripley will be able to return for the 2027 Royal Rumble.
