Santos Escobar is closing in on an official split from WWE. The luchador announced he will become a free agent in 10 days, once the 90-day waiting period tied to his release runs out.
In a video posted to Instagram this past Monday, July 13, Escobar kicked off a countdown and promised to revisit moments from his career before revealing his next move.
“Hey familia, it’s me. You know who. In 10 days’ time, I become a free agent. In the meantime, come with me, and let’s revisit a few of the episodes of my career and my life in the world of entertainment. At the end of these 10 days, let’s see what destiny has for us.”
That puts Escobar in position to sign with — or appear for — any promotion starting July 23. WWE released him on April 24 as part of the major wave of roster cuts that followed WrestleMania 42.
The exit closed out a short stint that began with his re-signing in October 2025. At the time, Escobar briefly became a free agent for about a day before accepting a new offer and returning to AAA programming in January.

His last match came at Rey de Reyes on March 14, where he competed while injured. Escobar went on to undergo two surgeries — one to repair his triceps, and another to address a complication involving his ulnar nerve.
Mexico looks like the most likely destination once again. According to Fightful Select, CMLL had already been lining up to sign Escobar before his WWE renewal, and those talks are expected to resume. A move to CMLL could also open the door to AEW appearances, given the working relationship between the two promotions.
Escobar spent time with WWE from 2019 to 2026, winning the NXT Cruiserweight Championship and leading Legado Del Fantasma. Before that, he worked as El Hijo del Fantasma in Mexico and King Cuerno in Lucha Underground.
