Santos Escobar is very close to returning to Mexico after being released by WWE in the company’s latest wave of layoffs late last week, just days after WrestleMania 42.
According to Fightful Select, CMLL already wanted to sign Escobar last year, when his WWE contract was about to expire.
However, WWE didn’t want to let the wrestler go and made a new offer considered “very good,” keeping him under contract for a few more months.
Now, with that deal over, negotiations between Escobar and CMLL are expected to resume as soon as his 90-day non-compete clause ends.
Escobar went through a turbulent final run in his last months with WWE. Despite his lucrative contract, he was used mainly in AAA, but even there he was barely featured. At AAA Rey de Reyes 2026, Escobar suffered an injury that sidelined him for several months — an injury he is still recovering from.
