Scorpio Sky opened up about the difficulties he’s faced during the multiple stretches he’s spent off AEW programming, despite being healthy and available to wrestle.
During a recent appearance on Tagging In with Chris Harris, the former AEW TNT Champion was asked how he manages to keep his passion and motivation for pro wrestling despite the lack of opportunities.
“It’s a really like a mind f, because on the surface it could be a lot worse. You’re sitting at home, getting paid, and there are people that don’t have a place to live. There are people that are struggling and living paycheck to paycheck. They’re working 60 hours a week and they’re barely able to make ends meet. So when you think about it on that scale it’s like, ‘I can’t complain man.’ But then there’s other days when you’re just like, ‘Man, I grew up dreaming of doing this. I didn’t grow up dreaming of getting paid to not do it.’ It’s hard. You want to do it because you love it. Not only that but from the business side, how you got to earn your next contract. It does get frustrating, especially when it’s out of your hands when it’s not due to injury. But that’s the nature of the business. I think a lot of wrestlers have gone through it, not just myself. There’s a lot of talent in all the companies and you’re never going to get used as often as you’d like to be used. So, you just kind of have to roll with it and try to put yourself in the best situation you can and be ready when your jersey number does get called.”
The situation carries even more weight given Sky’s contract status. The five-year deal he signed in 2021 is due to expire in October, and there’s no confirmation yet on a possible renewal.
Sky was part of AEW’s original roster, becoming the first AEW World Tag Team Champion in company history alongside Frankie Kazarian. He later went on to win the TNT Championship twice.
In recent months, Sky has been appearing again as a member of SkyFlight, alongside Top Flight and Christopher Daniels in ROH. His last match came at AEW Revolution on March 15, when he took part in the Blackjack Battle Royale for the National Championship.
