Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns are set to face each other again at WWE SummerSlam, but their history against each other at premium live events is shorter than many fans might expect.
During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Rollins noted that the match against Reigns, which will be for the World Heavyweight Championship, will be only their third singles match on WWE pay-per-view.
“One-on-one, Roman and I have only had… I want to say this will be our third singles pay-per-view match ever. We had one in 2022 at the Royal Rumble, which I won. And then we had one in 2016 at Money in the Bank, which I also won.
But for two guys who’ve been as prominently featured as we are in WWE for the last 14 years, to only have three is pretty wild, I would say.”
At Money in the Bank 2016, Rollins defeated Reigns to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The moment did not last long, however, as Dean Ambrose appeared shortly afterward, cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, and walked out as champion.
At Royal Rumble 2022, Rollins won by disqualification after Reigns refused to release the Guillotine even after the referee started the five-count. Reigns retained the Universal Championship, since the title could not change hands by disqualification.
WWE made Reigns vs. Rollins official for SummerSlam on Raw after Night of Champions. During the segment, Rollins once again brought up The Shield’s past and told Reigns that he had always had control over him.
SummerSlam will take place on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 in Minneapolis.
