NJPW’s recent ownership change is not expected to affect the Japanese promotion’s day-to-day relationship with AEW.
During the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door media call, Tony Khan was asked about Bushiroad transferring its shares to TV Asahi and CyberAgent, ending Bushiroad’s 14-year run as New Japan’s primary owner.
Khan said the change has not affected AEW and NJPW’s daily work together. According to Khan, the relationship between the two companies remains the same despite the new corporate structure in Japan.
The move was announced on May 27. Bushiroad will transfer 10,500,400 shares, representing 70% of NJPW, to TV Asahi and CyberAgent. The transaction is scheduled to close on June 30.
NJPW had also previously indicated that there were no plans to change its operations, including its events. Company president Hiroshi Tanahashi thanked Bushiroad for its years of support and said NJPW’s mission of delivering the best wrestling possible remains unchanged.
The situation is notable because CyberAgent also controls CyberFight, the group behind Pro Wrestling NOAH, DDT, and Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling. Still, New Japan will operate as a consolidated subsidiary of TV Asahi, with support from CyberAgent.
This year’s Forbidden Door will take place Sunday, June 28, at the SAP Center in San Jose, featuring talent from AEW, NJPW, CMLL, and STARDOM.
