WWE Plans Major Changes to RAW and SmackDown Tag Team Divisions

WWE is actively working to rebuild the men’s tag team divisions on Monday Night RAW and Friday Night SmackDown, both of which have lost significant depth throughout 2026.

Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that the company’s strategy centers on forming new teams from existing roster talent and promoting select teams from NXT. Signing established tag teams from outside promotions is not considered a priority at this time. The Miz and Kit Wilson were cited as an example of a pairing put together from within the current roster.

The need for change has been especially apparent on SmackDown. A report attributed to WRKD Wrestling described growing backstage frustration with the lack of depth and meaningful competition around the WWE Tag Team Championship.

WWE has already begun addressing the situation. Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga of MFT won the WWE Tag Team Championship on the August 14 SmackDown in Boston, defeating Damian Priest and R-Truth as well as the War Raiders. Haku has also started appearing alongside the new champions.

Priest and R-Truth had been fixtures in the tag title picture since the start of the year and had already been defending against members of MFT for months.

On RAW, Bron Breakker and Austin Theory continue to hold the World Tag Team Championship. The duo regained the titles from the Street Profits on July 6, and WWE has since featured Alpha Academy, Je’Von Evans, and Dragon Lee in programs around the champions.

The goal doesn’t appear to be simply shuffling the titles from team to team but building up the overall number of competitive tag teams.
