The Young Bucks revealed this week one of the most curious behind-the-scenes stories involving the early talks between the AEW founders and WWE, back before Tony Khan’s company was even created.
In a new episode of Being The Elite, Matt Jackson said that he, Nick Jackson, and Kenny Omega actually tried to make a match between them and The New Day happen. According to the wrestler, the talks reached Triple H, back in 2018.
“We truly were trying to get a New Day, Young Bucks, Kenny match to happen. We got on the phone to Triple H and we talked and said, ‘We would really like to do this match.'”
At the time, The New Day and The Elite faced off in a Street Fighter V showdown during E3 in Los Angeles. WWE itself promoted the event on its official website and highlighted that Omega picked the Young Bucks as his partners, while Xavier Woods teamed up with Kofi Kingston and Big E.
Years later, Kingston still referred to the Young Bucks as dream rivals, bringing up the “Forbidden Door” and pointing out that WWE had already allowed Mickie James to appear while she was tied to TNA.
Despite all that, the match never made it past the talking stage.
