AEW was the subject of a new rumor in recent days, this time involving an alleged directive for Tony Khan to cut costs beginning in August.
On a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, however, Dave Meltzer dismissed the story as “complete bullshit” and said that if it were true, the company would already be making major roster cuts.
The report comes just days after Khan also pushed back on speculation about AEW’s television future. During the post-ROH Supercard of Honor media scrum, the AEW president said rumors about the company having trouble landing its next media deal “could not be further from the truth.”
AEW still has a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. WBD announced a multi-year renewal with the company in 2024, keeping AEW Dynamite on TBS and AEW Collision on TNT, along with a simulcast on Max.
In other words, at least publicly, there is currently no sign that AEW is about to begin a major wave of cuts.
What does exist, once again, is a battle over the narrative surrounding Tony Khan’s company.
