WWE‘s decision to run NXT Heatwave and AAA Ola de Calor as a single combined card drew significant internal frustration from talent and staff involved in the event.
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported a major point of contention centered on NXT wrestlers performing four to five hours into a show geared primarily toward the AAA audience.
The August 30 event took place at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, where WWE offered a single ticket covering the full lineup. Ola de Calor ran first, leading directly into Heatwave. According to WrestleTix, 5,440 tickets were distributed by the morning of the show for a configuration of just over 6,100 seats.
Edinburg sits in the Rio Grande Valley, roughly 20 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, heavily shaping the crowd dynamic. Most fans in attendance bought tickets specifically for lucha libre, resulting in AAA talent receiving far louder reactions than nearly the entire NXT roster. Zilla Fatu was the lone notable exception.
The scheduling format proved costly as the night progressed. Meltzer previously revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE officials viewed the crowd’s response as a serious red flag. A large portion of the audience walked out once Ola de Calor concluded, leaving only about half the building in their seats when Grayson Waller captured the NXT Championship in the Heatwave main event.
