Becky Lynch held the top spot in WWE‘s women’s division when she learned she was pregnant, in 2020. Beyond the change to her personal life, the wrestler feared the news might shake the company’s confidence in other women.

In a recent appearance on Giovanna Fletcher’s “Happy Mum Happy Baby” podcast, Lynch revealed that the hardest moment was calling Vince McMahon, who ran WWE at the time, to tell him she needed to step away.

“The scariest of all was telling my boss, Vince McMahon.

“I called him and I was, oh my God I was terrified. I was terrified he was gonna- I was his champion and he had taken this chance on women main eventing, etc. I was like ‘oh no, what if I’ve ruined it for a generation of women’.

“Then I was like, that’s also not fair. We should be able to do both. That’s how my head was going into that conversation of ‘oh, this is great for me, but now I’ve ruined women for life. They’ll never be trusted again’.”

Lynch’s fear was tied directly to where she stood in the company. A year earlier, she’d beaten Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in the first-ever women’s match to main event WrestleMania, kicking off a 398-day reign as RAW Women’s Champion.

Vince’s reaction, though, turned out to be nothing like what she expected. According to an account she shared in her autobiography, McMahon celebrated the news and told her how happy he was for her.

She publicly announced the pregnancy on the May 11, 2020 episode of WWE Raw. That night, she revealed that the Money in the Bank Ladder Match Asuka had won was secretly contested for her title all along.

Her daughter with Seth Rollins, Roux, was born that December. Lynch returned to the ring at SummerSlam 2021 and defeated Bianca Belair to capture the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
