A statistic involving the WWE Championship started making the rounds on social media after CM Punk won the title on this past Monday Night RAW in Chicago, but it is not entirely accurate.
The post claims the last time WWE put its top title on someone under 40 was Bray Wyatt in 2017. However, the title’s official history shows several later examples.
Wyatt did win the WWE Championship on Feb. 12, 2017, at Elimination Chamber, when he was 29 years old. Since he was born on May 23, 1987, that part of the statistic is correct if the cutoff is “under 30.”
The last time WWE put the WWE championship on a guy under 40 was Bray Wyatt in 2017…. 9 Years ago!

Actually the last time WWE put the title on someone under 30… was also Bray Wyatt in 2017. 🤯 pic.twitter.com/BsdyDypgwO
The mistake comes with the “under 40” part. After Wyatt, Randy Orton won the title on April 2, 2017, at 37 years old. Jinder Mahal won it on May 21 of that same year at 30. Daniel Bryan captured the championship on Nov. 13, 2018, at 37. Kofi Kingston won it at WrestleMania 35 in 2019, also at 37.
The list continued after that. Drew McIntyre won the WWE Championship on April 5, 2020, at 34 years old, while Big E captured the title on Sept. 13, 2021, at 35. Roman Reigns also fits into that group after defeating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, when he was 36.
In other words, the correct statistic is different: Bray Wyatt remains the last wrestler under 30 to win the WWE Championship. The under-40 mark, however, has been broken several times since 2017.
