Chad Gable now has a date set for his first defense of the WWE Intercontinental Championship since capturing the title.
Adam Pearce has officially confirmed that Gable will put the belt on the line against Rey Mysterio on tomorrow night’s RAW, August 17, airing from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
The title match has been building since last week’s episode. Backstage, Gable approached Mysterio and told him he wanted to defend the Intercontinental Championship against one of the greatest names in lucha libre history.
Rey accepted the challenge on the spot, and Gable said he would take the idea to General Manager Adam Pearce to make it official.
Gable captured the title at SummerSlam on August 2, defeating Penta in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The win carried extra weight, coming in front of his family and his home state crowd, and it marked his first singles championship in WWE.
Mysterio, meanwhile, had a recent crack at the same title. On the June 8 RAW in Paris, the WWE Hall of Famer challenged Penta for the Intercontinental Championship but fell short after eating a Mexican Destroyer.
Now Mysterio gets another opportunity to add the Intercontinental Championship to his legacy.
