Cody Rhodes, the current Undisputed WWE Champion, still does not believe his story with The Rock in WWE is over.

During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Rhodes was asked whether he still needs to “finish the story” with The Final Boss, the character who played a major role in his rivalry with Roman Reigns during the road to WrestleMania 40.

“Hmm. Dwayne Johnson has become a bit of a fixture in my career and in my life. Not just for his flag-in-the-sand moment that was WrestleMania and the emergence of one of the better characters that we only saw a little of — The Final Boss.”

The rivalry between the two became a major focus in 2024, when The Rock aligned with Roman Reigns and faced Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the main event of Night One of WrestleMania 40.

Rock and Reigns won that match, which meant the Undisputed WWE Championship match took place under Bloodline Rules the following night.

Since then, even after Rhodes finally defeated Reigns and became champion, The Rock’s presence has continued to hang over his run.

“I don’t want to give it an absolute that we have to settle that, but I think it’s an unfinished story, which probably means there are two unfinished stories out there, and they don’t always get finished.”

Rhodes also explained that one way to close that story would be to follow The Rock’s path outside WWE by trying to find success in television and Hollywood.

“In wrestling, there is a lot of fantasy booking, but there’s a lot that goes into it. There’s a version of this story where finishing the story for me is trying to be as successful as I can be following his lead, breaking into TV and Hollywood that he thought only he could do, and doing that to honor him.”

However, Rhodes knows the version fans would rather see involves The Rock returning to WWE programming.

“But then there’s a version of it that’s appealing to a wrestling fan — that The Final Boss shows up and there’s more on the table than a non-ending. So I can’t answer that, Ariel.”

For now, Rhodes has another major challenge ahead, as he is set to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther and Sami Zayn at Night of Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
