Cody Rhodes Says Former WWE Figure “Did Not Like Me Like He Liked My Dad”

Cody Rhodes says Brian Gewirtz, the former WWE head writer who now works with The Rock at Seven Bucks Productions, isn’t exactly a fan of his.

Rhodes made the comment on the latest episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About?, with Simone Johnson as his guest. The subject came up while Johnson was discussing her new role at Seven Bucks Productions and praising Gewirtz. Rhodes recalled that his father, Dusty Rhodes, had a very different relationship with the writer.

“My dad loved Brian. He used to call him a Rabbit, I have no clue why. I used to call him Rabbit, but I learned very quickly that Brian — I knew I wasn’t my dad, I got that — but Brian did not like me like he liked my dad.”

“And I think I made the mistake of calling him that one time and he didn’t get sharp with me, but Brian, I would say, is not a fan of mine, yet I am a fan of Brian’s.”

Rhodes also admitted he had a hard time working with Gewirtz during his first WWE run, though he acknowledged that he kept getting good opportunities. Even so, he praised Gewirtz’s work on RAW and at Seven Bucks Productions.

The dynamic between the two had already become a talking point in 2024. During his rivalry with The Rock, Rhodes name-dropped Gewirtz in a promo on RAW, and the writer fired back on X, taking a shot at Cody’s dog Pharaoh in the process. Months later, Gewirtz also revealed that the promo in which Rhodes gave up his WrestleMania 40 spot for The Rock had been planned with a different tone in mind.

Rhodes is set to return to SmackDown this Friday (September 18), when he’ll sit down for an interview following his loss to Randy Orton at Sunday Night’s Main Event.
