FTR have been off AEW programming since Double or Nothing, where they lost the AEW World Tag Team Championship to Adam Copeland and Christian Cage in an I Quit Match.
In a recent Instagram post, Harwood explained that the absence is not just tied to a creative decision, but to the wear and tear the team has built up over the last several years.
“For the first time in 12 years, we’ve decided to step away and take some time for ourselves & for our families. I’m not sure when we’ll be back, what we’re going to do, how much longer we have, or if we even need to prove anything at all anymore.”
According to Dax, aside from the biceps injury he suffered in 2017, the team had not taken a real break since the summer of 2014. He also said both men had reached a point of physical and mental exhaustion.
Cash Wheeler has also suggested that the team may be closer to the end than the beginning. Speaking with Late Night Grin, he said FTR’s most recent reign was likely their last with the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
As of now, there is no confirmed date for FTR’s return to AEW. However, the team already has independent dates scheduled for August, including a match against The Good Brothers on August 22 and another against the Young Guns at RevPro’s anniversary show on August 29.
