Eric Young is getting closer to starting another run with WWE, just days after officially leaving TNA.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the current plan calls for Young to return around September and work in NXT in a role similar to Shawn Spears, acting as both a wrestler and a player-coach on the brand.

Young’s TNA departure was announced on July 1, with the company confirming the move. Shortly afterward, Young explained that he asked for his release and denied that he had been working only under a handshake deal.

“The internet is FN WILD! 3 things to know about the news today!!!!

I asked for my release! They granted it!
I was never on a handshake deal. I have had a binding contract the entire time!
I will work where I want how I want and for whom I want! My track record, resume, accolades and reputation are proof of that!

See you soon!!!!”

According to Fightful Select, WWE sources were already expecting Young to return to the company, though there was still no public word on what his role would be. The key point is that he has always had a good relationship with Triple H, who did not want him to leave in 2023.

Young’s first WWE run lasted from 2016 to 2020, when he led SAnitY in NXT. Alongside Alexander Wolfe, he won the NXT Tag Team Championship at TakeOver: Brooklyn III in 2017.

Young later re-signed with WWE in November 2022, but never appeared on television. The original plan involved a stable with Bray Wyatt and Uncle Howdy before Young requested his release after Vince McMahon returned to power.
