Add as a preferred source on Google ESPN is getting into the title business.
The network announced Wednesday that it will debut a custom ESPN championship belt at SummerSlam this weekend as part of a new “Moment of the Night” award, which will be presented after every WWE premium live event going forward.
The award goes to the most impactful performance, storyline or match moment from each PLE. Because SummerSlam is a two-nighter, there will be two winners — one after Saturday’s show and one after Sunday’s.
The belt itself is black and red and carries WWE, ESPN and SportsCenter branding, which points to the presentation happening on SportsCenter once each night wraps. ESPN says the title will also factor into fan-facing content, creator work and on-site activations across the weekend.
What ESPN didn’t say is who picks the winner, or whether fans get a vote.
SummerSlam runs 8/1 and 8/2 from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, with both nights starting at 6 p.m. ET. It streams on the ESPN App for ESPN Unlimited subscribers in the U.S. — the first SummerSlam since the WWE-ESPN deal kicked in last September — with Netflix handling it internationally.
Night one is headlined by CM Punk defending the Undisputed WWE Title against Cody Rhodes, with Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi in a Hell in a Cell and Liv Morgan defending the Women’s World Title against IYO SKY underneath. Night two has Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Title against Seth Rollins on top.
