Penta may be on the verge of his first World Heavyweight Championship match in WWE. The luchador is reportedly the likely winner of the ongoing tournament to determine Roman Reigns’ challenger on the September 14 RAW in Mexico City.
The report comes from WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, based on a conversation with a WWE talent who shared the current backstage sentiment.
“After speaking with a talent, @WrestleVotes Radio on @FightfulSelect has learned that the feeling backstage is that Penta will be the winner of the ongoing luchadores tournament to determine a challenger to Reigns’ title on WWE Raw in Mexico City.”
Penta has already taken the first step toward making that a reality. On last week’s RAW (8/10), he defeated Laredo Kid with a Mexican Destroyer to advance to the semifinals. His next opponent will be determined by the Psycho Clown vs. La Parka match, set for this Saturday’s AAA show.
On the other side of the bracket, Dragon Lee faces El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., while Rey Fenix takes on El Fiscal, both on the August 17 RAW in Buffalo, New York.
Winning the tournament would mark a massive step up for Penta. At SummerSlam on August 2, he dropped the Intercontinental Championship to Chad Gable, ending his first title reign in WWE.
That same night, Reigns defeated Seth Rollins to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
