Rumor on Roman Reigns’ Next WWE World Heavyweight Championship Challenger Debunked

Roman Reigns is set to defend the World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 Raw at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, but his challenger remains officially undecided.

El Grande Americano had emerged as the frontrunner. Bryan Alvarez reported on Wednesday’s Wrestling Observer Live that the masked wrestler was being discussed backstage as a possible opponent for the Tribal Chief.

In a follow-up on Wrestling Observer Live, Alvarez said WWE is denying Americano will get the shot:

“WWE is claiming that it is not going to be Roman Reigns and El Grande [Americano].”

Dave Meltzer also reported that WWE views the Mexico City match with Reigns as a major opportunity for whichever Mexican wrestler lands the spot, even if Reigns retains.

Rey Mysterio announced this week on Raw that a tournament featuring luchadores from Raw, SmackDown and AAA will determine the challenger. Mysterio revealed the plans during a backstage meeting with Reigns.

Americano is also booked to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the AAA Mega Championship at TripleManía 34 Night 2 on September 13 at Arena CDMX.
