Finn Bálor confirmed that WWE once worked on a match between The Demon and The Fiend, two of the darkest characters in the company’s recent history.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the Irishman was asked about the dream match that never came together, and he revealed that it had, in fact, been in the works.

“That was certainly in the works.”

Bálor also said this is one of the few major matches he wanted to have but never got the chance to. However, his history with Bray Wyatt nearly took another supernatural turn years before The Fiend ever emerged.

“We almost got Sister Abigail versus The Demon.”

The match in question was scheduled for TLC 2017. At the time, Wyatt was set to face The Demon as Sister Abigail, but he was pulled from the show for medical reasons just days beforehand. AJ Styles stepped away from SmackDown to replace him and ended up losing to Bálor in what was their first-ever singles match against each other.

The rivalry had already made a stop at that year’s SummerSlam, where The Demon defeated Bray Wyatt. Bálor beat him again at No Mercy, this time without using his alter ego.

Two years later, Wyatt finally debuted The Fiend in a match against Bálor at SummerSlam 2019. The character dominated the match and won with the Mandible Claw, but he faced the traditional version of the former Universal Champion, not The Demon.
