Gunther suffered a significant loss on Thursday night, July 16, during a WWE Summer Tour stop at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
In the main event, CM Punk put the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line and defeated the Ring General to retain the title. It was Punk’s first match as champion at a live event since his current reign began.
Punk won the title on July 6, stepping in for Cody Rhodes and defeating Sami Zayn on Monday Night RAW. Now the Best in the World will face Rhodes himself at SummerSlam.
Gunther, meanwhile, appears to be getting pulled from the Undisputed WWE Championship picture for now. As previously reported by Wrestling Noticias, his match against Nick Aldis is also set for SummerSlam, though WWE has yet to make it official.

The rivalry picked up steam on the July 10 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, when Gunther brutally attacked the general manager and left him trapped in several sleeper holds. As a result, Adam Pearce will take over as interim general manager of tonight’s show.
Before SummerSlam, Gunther is still advertised to team with Sami Zayn against Punk and Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event this Saturday, July 18, at Madison Square Garden.
This was only the second singles match between Punk and Gunther. At SummerSlam 2025, Punk defeated the Austrian and won the World Heavyweight Championship, only to lose the title minutes later when Seth Rollins cashed in.
