Nick Aldis got his revenge on Gunther this Saturday, July 18, at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The SmackDown General Manager interfered in the tag team match pitting CM Punk and Cody Rhodes against Gunther and Sami Zayn. Aldis showed up with the Undisputed WWE Championship and cracked the title across the Ring General’s face, clearing the way for Punk and Rhodes to get the win.

The match carried a major stipulation. Had Gunther and Zayn won, both would have been added to the Undisputed WWE Championship match between Punk and Rhodes at SummerSlam, turning it into a Fatal 4-Way Match. With the result, the showdown between the champion and the American Nightmare remains a singles match.

The interference was a direct response to what happened on the July 10 episode of SmackDown. That night, Gunther attacked Aldis backstage after the General Manager confirmed the tag team match and refused to immediately put him in the title match. The attack led to Adam Pearce temporarily taking charge of the blue brand.

The rivalry is now expected to lead to a match at SummerSlam, set for August 1 and 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

If confirmed, it would mark Aldis’s return to the ring for the first time since he signed with WWE and took over as SmackDown General Manager in 2023.
