Baron Corbin will get a shot at reclaiming the United States Championship, nearly nine years after his first reign. After Friday’s WWE SmackDown went off the air in Oakland, Corbin attacked Trick Williams, and a match between the two was confirmed for SummerSlam soon after.

The attack came after Williams competed in the Fatal 4-Way Match that closed out the broadcast and determined Finn Bálor as Sami Zayn’s opponent at SummerSlam. Corbin never appeared on the televised show, so the new chapter of the rivalry played out only for the fans inside Oakland Arena.

The story began on July 10, when Corbin returned to WWE during the match between Williams and Carmelo Hayes. The Lone Wolf attacked both wrestlers, forcing the match to end, and immediately made clear he was coming for the United States Championship.

This won’t be their first one-on-one match. Corbin beat Williams on the June 6, 2023, episode of WWE NXT. Months later, teaming with Bron Breakker, he also defeated Williams and Hayes in the final of the 2024 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

SummerSlam will take place August 1-2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
