Rey Mysterio, one of the biggest names in WWE history, revealed that he came very close to ending his in-ring career shortly before Dominik Mysterio made his debut.
During a recent appearance on The Late Run, the WWE Hall of Famer said that around five or six years ago, he no longer felt the same emotion when stepping into the ring. According to Rey, his body was mentally and physically worn down to the point that he spoke with his wife about possibly retiring.
“Not too long ago, maybe about five or six years, I just wasn’t getting that same emotion when I would step into the ring. I think my body was burnt out mentally, physically. I told my wife. I remember sitting down with her and telling her, ‘You know what? I don’t feel what I would always feel everytime I would step into the ring, I think I’m gonna tap out. I just don’t feel it anymore.’
Shortly after, my son told me that he wanted to try and break into the business. Seeing him or helping him get on board kind of just inspired or ignited that fire once again, and it’s been going since.“
Dominik made his official WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam 2020, where he faced Seth Rollins in a Street Fight. Although he lost, his performance drew attention.
A short time later, Rey and Dominik made history by winning the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, becoming the first father-son duo to accomplish the feat.
Rey was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023 while still active as a wrestler, and he defeated Dominik at WrestleMania 39 one night after the ceremony.
