WWE Sets Historic Tournament for Roman Reigns’ Next Title Challenger

Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14, 2026 episode of Raw at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. His challenger will be determined through a tournament featuring wrestlers from three different brands.

Rey Mysterio, the current AAA General Manager, made the announcement. According to Mysterio, the tournament will feature the top luchadores from Raw, SmackDown and AAA. The format, participants and match dates have yet to be announced.

This will mark the first time a World Heavyweight Championship opportunity has been decided through a tournament involving all three brands.

The news comes after the segment that closed out the August 3, 2026 episode of Raw. Mysterio approached Reigns backstage, revealed that he is now the AAA General Manager and said he had some business to discuss with him.

The title match will take place one day after Night 2 of Triplemanía 34, which will be held at Arena CDMX on September 13, 2026. Night 1 of AAA’s biggest event will take place in Las Vegas on September 11, 2026.

Penta, Dominik Mysterio, El Grande Americano, Rey Fenix and Los Garza are among the names advertised for WWE’s Mexico events, but none have been officially confirmed for the tournament as of this writing.

Reigns is coming off a successful title defense against Seth Rollins on Night 2 of SummerSlam.
