Sting has once again opened up about his partnership with Darby Allin in AEW, highlighting how working with the younger wrestler changed his final years in the ring.
The WWE Hall of Famer wrapped up his career in March 2024 at AEW Revolution, where he teamed with Allin to defend the AEW World Tag Team Championship against The Young Bucks in Greensboro.
In a recent feature with ESPN, Sting said he initially tried to convince Darby to cut back on the risks he was taking in his matches. However, the opposite ended up happening.
According to Sting, Allin influenced him to take far more dangerous spots than he expected at that stage of his career. “The Icon” joked that, by the end, nobody knew which one of them would be responsible for the riskiest moment of the match.
“At first, I was trying to talk some sense into him by saying he didn’t have to do these risky moves every match. But, man, he rubbed off on me, and I ended up taking way more risks than I anticipated myself taking.
By the end, you didn’t know whether the young guy was going to jump off the balcony or the old guy was going to jump off the balcony. And sometimes we both did together.
We’ll be friends until one of us leaves the earth. He taught me how to live life to the fullest.”
Sting and Darby’s partnership began in 2021, shortly after the veteran arrived in AEW. The two went on to build a 28-match winning streak, including 15 tag team matches together.
Darby is now in a new chapter in AEW as AEW World Champion. He is set to defend the title against “Speedball” Mike Bailey this Wednesday, just days before Double or Nothing.
