Will Ospreay is on top of AEW after winning the AEW World Championship, but MJF still considers himself the company’s true champion.
The story picked up after MJF lost the title to Kenny Omega on the July 8 episode of AEW Dynamite Beach Break. In the match’s final moments, Ospreay stopped MJF from using the Dynamite Diamond Ring, clearing the way for Omega’s win.
In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Ospreay addressed the situation and ripped into MJF.
“He is delusional, man. He is out of his mind. The fact that he’s walking around with that and no one has confiscated that belt. That’s how entitled the guy is. That’s how much sway and how much pull he’s got. He can just bring his own belt and call himself that, and it’s all well and good. But let’s be honest, the geezer’s a tosser.”
MJF returned to AEW programming at Grand Slam Mexico, attacking Andrade El Ídolo and once again carrying his own belt. Days later, he beat Nick Wayne and Mike Bailey to lock up the No. 2 spot in the All In Casino Gauntlet Match, keeping up his claim that he’s the only true champion in AEW.
At All In on August 30, though, it was Andrade who won the Casino Gauntlet, while Ospreay beat Kenny Omega in the main event to win his first AEW World Championship. After the show, MJF again blamed Ospreay for what happened and vowed revenge.
Ospreay, meanwhile, already has his next big challenge lined up. The current champion will defend the AEW World Championship against Jon Moxley at All Out on September 26 in Chicago.
