Will Ospreay revealed that his match against Kenny Omega at AEW All In had to be changed just hours before the two went to the ring. Other wrestlers had used ideas that were planned for their match.
Ospreay beat Omega in the main event of All In, held on August 30 at Wembley Stadium in London, winning the AEW World Championship for the first time.
In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Ospreay explained that he initially had no concrete ideas for the match. Things started coming together once he and Omega sat down to talk about the story they wanted to tell.
“It was just wild, just because going into it, I had really no ideas. I had feelings that I wanted to feel, but I didn’t know how to relay that in terms of the match storytelling. It was only when me and Kenny sat down and started talking about stuff, and then we just came together, and it was just like idea, flow and idea, flow. Honestly, I’d love to be able to tell you guys that when we were hours from going on, and we found out that some people that did stuff that we wanted to do in our match. So then it put us under even more pressure to try and change things around and try and fit it in within our story. It’s no one’s fault. Things happen. I don’t blame anyone in that situation, but it was just as frustrating as it was. What we came up with, what our plan B was, was way, way, way better. So, I was dead happy with that.”
Ospreay didn’t reveal which wrestlers used the ideas he and Omega had planned, or which parts of the match had to be reworked. The current champion also made clear he doesn’t blame anyone for what happened.
“Kind of no. It was maybe two or three matches before. So, we still had time on our hands, but I think a lot of it was just because we were putting so much pressure on ourselves, and we were just worried because obviously when you do these type of shows, you’re always communicating with the other wrestlers. But because it was a stadium, it’s so hard to have that kind of communication with everybody. So naturally, things will happen, and we just had faith that nothing else was going to happen that would have stepped on our toes, and thankfully no one did. But man, what we were able to come up with and what we were able to do, I couldn’t have done that with anybody. There were so many other alternative options for that main event than what it could have been. But I knew if this was my moment, I didn’t want to read anybody else’s script. I wanted it to be myself and Kenny. I really wanted that.”
Despite the changes, Ospreay said the “Plan B” he and Omega came up with ended up being better than the original idea. The match lasted 34 minutes and 25 seconds, with Ospreay beating Omega to close out All In as the new AEW World Champion.
