Rey Mysterio reportedly shot down the idea of a retirement match against Gunther at WWE WrestleMania 42.
According to Billi Bhatti on the Dirty Sheets Podcast, the original plan called for Mysterio to be added to the Ring General’s list of retired legends.
“There were rumors that he was supposed to go in there with Brock Lesnar, and that got changed. That’s bullsh*t. Brock Lesnar was always going in there with Oba Femi.”
“Gunther’s actual original plan was to retire Rey Mysterio.”
Mysterio reportedly turned it down because he isn’t ready to hang up his boots and wants Dominik Mysterio to be the one to retire him in a match in Mexico.
“Rey Mysterio said, ‘I don’t want to retire yet. I certainly don’t want to retire to Gunther because my plan is to have my son retire me and to do it in Mexico.'”
Talk of a Gunther vs. Mysterio program had already circulated ahead of WrestleMania, but at the time, the change was chalked up to the rib injury Mysterio suffered in January. He was ultimately cleared in time for the show and worked the Intercontinental Title Ladder Match, while Gunther faced Seth Rollins.
Gunther faces Nick Aldis at SummerSlam this Saturday. Earlier this week, Dominik also said he wants to face his father in a retirement match at the historic Auditorio de Tijuana in Mexico.
