Austin Theory may still be a long way from reaching the ceiling WWE envisions for his career. Despite years of ups and downs on the main roster, the company reportedly has long-term plans to build him into one of its top stars.
According to the WrestleTales Insider Report, the strategy calls for keeping Theory heel for an extended stretch before eventually pulling the trigger on a babyface turn. The report notes that WWE sees continued fan interest in Theory even when he’s not prominently featured on television.
“The fans still talk about him. When he’s not on TV, they ask for him. He’s got IT. WWE wants to play the long game with Theory. Do a reverse Rock/Roman where he’s so terrible and a historical abomination as a heel that a face turn will propel him to the top very quickly.”
The comparison to The Rock and Roman Reigns was part of the assessment laid out in the report.
For now, Theory remains firmly entrenched in The Vision. He and Bron Breakker recaptured the World Tag Team Championship on July 6, beating The Street Profits after interference from Maxxine Dupri, who officially joined the stable afterward.
Theory’s pairing with Maxxine has also become a key part of his character. On the July 13 RAW, the two furthered their rivalry with Otis.
Theory also picked up a win over Akira Tozawa on the August 10 RAW, finishing the match with the Off Switch.
