Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles were reportedly involved in WWE’s planning for the John Cena Classic, the tournament John Cena announced in May.
WrestleVotes Radio, via Fightful Select, reported that WWE held a lot of meetings and creative discussions to come up with a presentation that’s different from what the company usually does. Michaels and Styles are among those who usually aren’t involved in this type of project.
The report said WWE is looking at other options for how the special will air. The John Cena Classic was originally planned as part of Club WWE, but one source expects it to be moved elsewhere to reach more viewers.
The report had an update on Cena’s return to TV. Backstage at Monday’s RAW, the belief was that he would use his next appearance to reveal the date, location, and format of the tournament.
Cena wrote on X that speculation would end on November 2. He used the phrase “Never Seen” to promote the tournament.
As originally announced at Backlash, NXT talent will take on main roster talent in the tournament. Regardless of the match results, the winner will be decided by a fan vote.
WWE is looking at December 12 or December 19 for the show.
Michaels’ involvement in the discussions comes as WWE could make changes in creative. Mike Johnson of PWInsider reported on Thursday that WWE is planning to promote Michaels into Bruce Prichard’s current role after WrestleMania 43.
Cena is set to appear on next week’s RAW at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
