AEW is coming off one of its most important weeks of 2026, particularly after Forbidden Door, which took place last Sunday at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
On a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said the company is in its strongest position since its 2021 peak, a period defined by that year’s All Out, when CM Punk returned to the ring and Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson debuted for the company.
“It’s not as hot as it was at the time [All Out 2021], but it’s probably the strongest it’s been since then in terms of crowd reactions, in terms of depth and storylines… it’s better than ever. The depth is unbelievable.
The company that probably had the greatest depth of talent that I can remember is probably WCW in the late 1990s. If you really look at the roster that they had and compare it with today, it’s unbelievable. They didn’t do anything with like two-thirds of those people. This is the most depth of any company since then, but AEW does stuff with the undercard guys.”
Dave Meltzer believes AEW in 2026 the strongest it's been since 2021, and their roster depth/utilisation is better than even late ‘90s WCW:

The comment comes at a time when AEW has several major stories moving at once. Will Ospreay defeated Swerve Strickland in the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final to earn a shot at the AEW World Championship at All In: London. Mercedes Moné also won the women’s bracket and will challenge for the women’s world title again at the event.
Mark Briscoe also earned a future AEW World Championship opportunity after Team Briscoe defeated Team DCMJF in the 12-Man Steel Cage Match. Andrade El Ídolo also broke away from the Don Callis Family during the same match.
It remains to be seen whether this positive stretch will lead to stronger numbers for AEW going forward. For now, though, the company is heading toward All In with several major names in key positions.
