Nigel McGuinness advanced in the AEW Continental Challenge Cup, but his future in the tournament is now in question after suffering an injury on the latest Collision.
McGuinness defeated Katsuyori Shibata on the August 15 show to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals. Later during the main event, Tony Schiavone announced on commentary that the British wrestler had been hurt during the bout. The severity and nature of the injury have not been disclosed.
AEW has promised an update on Monday, August 17, during its YouTube special, which will also feature the quarterfinal draw. Until then, there is no confirmation that McGuinness will be able to continue in the tournament.
The match against Shibata, the first-ever singles bout between the two, went 12 minutes and 26 seconds. In the closing stretch, Shibata locked in a Sleeper Hold, but McGuinness reversed the hold and pinned Shibata’s shoulders to the mat for the pinfall.

1:53 AM · Aug 16, 2026The injury is all the more concerning given that it came in McGuinness’s first match in 92 days. His last in-ring appearance was on May 15 at ROH Supercard of Honor, where he defeated Josh Woods.
With the victory, Nigel joined the quarterfinal field alongside Jon Moxley, Jay White, Claudio Castagnoli, Eddie Kingston, Orange Cassidy, Hechicero, and Kyle O’Reilly. Matchups will be determined by draw.
The Continental Challenge Cup is a 16-man single-elimination tournament. The semifinals are set for the August 26 Dynamite in Glasgow, and the final will take place at All In: London on August 30 at Wembley Stadium. The winner will also claim the AEW Continental Championship.
