CM Punk is moving closer to a WWE return, and SummerSlam could be the stage for his next major match.

According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, Punk is expected to have a major role at the August event. The report comes amid the “Second City Saint’s” lengthy absence from programming, as his last appearance came on the post-WrestleMania 42 episode of RAW, when he had a confrontation with Cody Rhodes.

At the time, Rhodes interrupted Punk after his loss to Roman Reigns and left the door open for a possible match for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The segment ended with Cody telling Punk he only needed to choose when he wanted the match.

WWE is also already listing Punk as one of the featured stars for the July 6 episode of RAW at Allstate Arena in Chicago. If the company does move in that direction, that show could mark the real start of the build to SummerSlam.

This year’s event will take place on August 1 and 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, marking the first two-night edition of SummerSlam.

There is still no official confirmation that Rhodes vs. Punk will take place at SummerSlam.
