Cody Rhodes believes The Rock still has a few matches left in WWE, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility that The Rock’s in-ring career ended at WrestleMania 40.

Rhodes left the door open to finally facing The Rock in a singles match, though he did not confirm whether WWE ever had the match planned.

During an appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Rhodes was asked about the challenge he issued to The Rock at Elimination Chamber 2024 in Perth.

Rhodes tried to avoid giving a detailed answer.

“Oh my gosh,” Rhodes said. He started to describe it as deep but didn’t finish the thought.

Van Vliet pressed him on whether the match would ever happen. Rhodes explained why he needs to be careful.

“Oof,” Rhodes said. “It’s not that I’m evading that answer. It’s that I don’t really know how to answer because I think, personally, he has a couple of matches probably left to do. I think that personally.”

The Rock last wrestled for WWE on Night 1 of WrestleMania 40, when he teamed with Roman Reigns to defeat Rhodes and Seth Rollins. The Rock was also involved in the Night 2 main event but was not an official participant.

In Rhodes’ view, The Rock’s WrestleMania 40 appearances may have been a fitting farewell.

Rhodes noted that The Rock has given everything and continues to do so as a member of the TKO board. He said The Rock could easily look at WrestleMania 40 as a great way to close out his career as an in-ring performer.

At a WWE press conference in February 2025, The Rock said his story with Rhodes didn’t necessarily need to end in a match.

The comment helps explain why The Rock and Rhodes have never had a singles match. The Rock has shown interest in leaning into his Final Boss persona without having to return to the ring.

Rhodes acknowledged that only The Rock can decide his in-ring future.

“That’ll be up to him,” Rhodes said. “That’ll certainly be up to him, if there’s more and what those matches might be.”

“I don’t think any wrestler would ever look you in the eye and tell you they wouldn’t want a match like that,” Rhodes said.

Rhodes also said it’s hard to predict what will happen in WWE right now. He believes the unpredictability leaves room for matches that seemed unlikely.

“This isn’t me trying to justify anything, but, yeah, no, you are part of an era that’s the most unpredictable time in wrestling, really,” Rhodes said. “It’s unpredictable.”
