TJP is pushing for a new Cruiserweight Classic, and he says he isn’t the only one.
Speaking on The Certified Mark Show, TJP said several people have been pitching WWE on bringing the tournament back a decade after the original, himself included. He also said he would take part even outside the ring, including as a host.
“The amount of people that have been pitching for it, including myself, man. I mean, I loved it. Like, why not run it back?”
The idea grew on him during a recent visit to WWE’s facilities in Orlando. He and Lince Dorado found his Cruiserweight Classic trophy in the company’s archives, and the two started talking backstage about how to pitch the concept again. TJP has been in Orlando a few times this year to work as a coach.
The original Cruiserweight Classic ran in 2016 with a 32-man field that included Kota Ibushi, Zack Sabre Jr., Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Cedric Alexander and Gran Metalik. TJP beat Gran Metalik in the final and became the first WWE Cruiserweight Champion of the title lineage WWE created that year.
Nothing is official. There is no indication that Triple H or other WWE executives have approved bringing it back, and the return of the Cruiserweight Classic is still just a pitch from people around the company.
