Gunther could officially become a Friday Night SmackDown star as soon as tonight’s show, which will take place at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina.
WWE confirmed that the “Ring General” will have to decide whether he accepts the move to the blue brand, something required for him to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy.
The situation picked up steam last week, when Paul Heyman repaid the favor he owed Gunther and presented a contract for the Austrian star to face Rhodes at the company’s next premium live event. Before that, Gunther had already attacked the champion, increasing the tension between the two.

Clash in Italy will take place on May 31 at Inalpi Arena in Turin, marking WWE’s first premium live event on Italian soil. Cody Rhodes and Gunther are among the names officially featured for the event.
In addition to Gunther, tonight’s SmackDown will also feature Trick Williams returning to the University of South Carolina for a special celebration, while Jade Cargill will speak after her return and attack on Rhea Ripley.
It remains to be seen whether Gunther will agree to become a permanent part of SmackDown, or if WWE will find another way to make his match against Cody Rhodes official for Clash In Italy.
