Roman Reigns will arrive at WWE Clash in Italy as more than just the World Heavyweight Champion. The OTC will also have a family connection to the country hosting WWE’s first Premium Live Event on Italian soil.

Although Reigns was born in Pensacola, Florida, he is the son of Sika Anoa’i, who was of Samoan descent, and Patricia Hooker, who has been cited as being of Sicilian Italian descent. That gives WWE a natural chance in Turin to spotlight a lesser-explored side of his character.

The detail gained traction on social media after fans pointed out that Roman will, in a way, be wrestling “at home” at Clash in Italy, where he will face Jacob Fatu in a Tribal Combat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship. WWE has confirmed the bout as a major part of the event, which takes place Sunday, May 31, at 2 p.m. ET, streaming in the United States on the ESPN App.

The note also brings back an older part of Reigns’ presentation. During his early years on the main roster, he wore blue contact lenses, something that was dropped when Paul Heyman and Joe Anoa’i reshaped the character, moved the “Big Dog” out of the picture, and paved the way for the Tribal Chief.

It remains to be seen whether WWE will directly reference Reigns’ Italian roots at the event, especially on a show already carrying plenty of symbolism for the company’s international expansion.
