Sheamus opened up once again about one of the biggest moments of his pro-wrestling career: his quick capture of the WWE Championship against John Cena at TLC 2009.

In a recent interview with OTB Football, the Irish star said his rise happened almost overnight. At the time, he had just moved from ECW to Monday Night RAW and, shortly after, won a Breakthrough Battle Royal.

“Yeah, it happened really fast. One minute I was on ECW, the next minute I was switched to ‘Raw.’ Literally happened over night. I was going to debut on ‘Raw,’ it was literally like the day before I was told you’re switching over to ‘Raw’ and that was it. And then, I’m in the Breakthrough Battle Royal … it came up to me and Kofi [Kingston], who was also brand new. And then all of a sudden, wrestling John Cena TLC. My second pay-per-view ever. I’m wrestling the World Heavyweight Champion. And then a couple hours later, I’m holding the title, my foot on John’s chest and the title on my left arm … It just blew everyone away. Shocked the world. It was phenomenal.”

The win took place on December 13, 2009, in San Antonio, when Sheamus defeated Cena in a Tables Match to capture the first world title of his career, shocking the WWE audience.

The moment carries even more weight today because Sheamus is still trying to become a Grand Slam Champion. The Intercontinental Championship remains the only major title that has eluded him, despite the opportunities he’s had against Bron Breakker.

Currently, the Celtic Warrior is still recovering from a shoulder injury.
