John Cena is officially retired from in-ring competition, and his current WWE contract all but rules out the possibility of him working a match anywhere else.
According to Fightful Select, Cena remains under a multi-year WWE deal in an ambassador role. When asked about the former champion potentially appearing for another promotion, company sources said his contract would not allow it.
Cena himself had actually disclosed the deal before his retirement. On December 8, 2025, he confirmed that he had signed a new five-year agreement to continue representing WWE while also helping develop talent behind the scenes.
The update comes after Cena left the door slightly open to a possible return. In an interview with Us Weekly published in June, he said it would take an almost absurd financial commitment to bring him back.
“I hate speaking in absolutes … ‘Never’ is a strong word. It would be financial suicide for someone to court me in a position where I would have another match, and I truly mean that. So if you’re in the business of torching currency, that’s the only way to get me back in the ring.”

Since then, the 17-time World Champion has stayed active within WWE. He hosted WrestleMania 42 and continues working as a backstage mentor, recently making it clear that he plans to remain with the company even without competing.
WWE is also currently targeting December for the John Cena Classic, an event Cena himself announced at Backlash, though the date remains subject to change.
