Add as a preferred source on Google CM Punk and Cody Rhodes will square off against Gunther and Sami Zayn in the main event of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event this Saturday, July 18, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Michael Cole confirmed on the latest episode of The Sal Licata Show that the tag team match will close out the WWE special.
The matchup was announced on the most recent episode of Friday Night SmackDown, after Gunther demanded that Nick Aldis change his plans for SummerSlam. The Ring General wanted in on the Undisputed WWE Championship match, but what he got instead was the tag match in New York.
The rivalry between the four stars picked up steam at Night of Champions, where Sami Zayn defeated Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship for the first time in his career.
That reign lasted just nine days. Gunther attacked Rhodes ahead of the title rematch on Monday Night RAW, clearing the way for CM Punk to step into the opportunity and beat Zayn in Chicago.
On the following episode of SmackDown, Punk and Rhodes came face to face, and their title match was confirmed for SummerSlam. Before they settle things between themselves, though, the two will have to team up against two wrestlers directly involved in the title picture.
Also on the card for Saturday: Paige and Brie Bella defending the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid, Danhausen taking on JD McDonagh in a No Disqualification Match, and Bayley going one-on-one with Lyra Valkyria.
Roman Reigns and New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson are also advertised for an appearance.
