Maya World is headed into one of the biggest title defenses of her reign. The AEW TBS Champion will put the title on the line next week on AEW Dynamite against Kris Statlander, Persephone, and Hikaru Shida in a fatal four-way.
The match was announced during tonight’s Dynamite in Las Vegas after Statlander picked up a win over Viva Van. The former champion has been angling for a title shot in the wake of the last few weeks’ developments.
The rivalry between all four actually predates Maya’s title win. On July 1, Statlander, Persephone, and Shida competed in a Survival of the Fittest Match for the vacant championship, which Shida won.
Maya dethroned Shida on July 26 at AEW Redemption to capture the TBS Championship for the first time. Just three days later, she successfully defended against Persephone in her first title defense. Shida attempted to interfere with a kendo stick during the match, but Statlander made the save.
The situation escalated at Grand Slam Mexico on August 5, where Persephone defeated Statlander following interference from Shida. Maya World later came out to stop a further attack.
Next week’s Dynamite takes place at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
