AAA at one point planned to end the Penta character, and Kalisto revealed that the company wanted to unmask Penta and have him go back to an earlier persona.
In an interview with David Otunga on The Wednesday Hang, Kalisto said he was supposed to be the one to unmask Penta before he himself signed with WWE. The plan also called for Penta to drop the Pentagón Jr. name and go back to the Dark Dragon character.
Kalisto explained how the storyline was supposed to end.
“I was supposed to demask him, and no more Penta. It was going to be gone. It was no longer going to exist.”
The idea was ultimately scrapped when Kalisto left AAA to sign with WWE. Penta stayed with AAA and kept using the character created for him.
The two took different paths. Kalisto noted that Penta built his persona around the famous “Cero Miedo” catchphrase, while Kalisto became known for “Lucha, Lucha” during his time in WWE.
Still, the two faced each other again years later in Guadalajara, Mexico, shortly before Penta arrived in WWE. Kalisto recalled winning the match, but he said they were both careful to avoid an injury that could have put Penta’s signing at risk.
Kalisto’s revelation also ties in with an interview Penta gave on The Rich Eisen Show in March. Penta explained on the show that he dropped the Dark Dragon name to become Pentagón Jr. because he wanted to create something different from other Mexican luchadores.
Kalisto and Penta’s history in AAA began with those very characters. At Guerra de Titanes on December 2, 2012, Kalisto, then known as Octagón Jr., teamed with Octagón and La Parka to defeat Pentagón Jr., La Parka Negra, and Silver King.
